this might be a nice companion piece for this 1967 krzysztof komeda show with a much younger tomasz stanko.  nice to see things going around like that.  not anything that i’ve seen before since i don’t watch polanskiy’s films.  nice line up, too!  looking for this on the web, i did run across a jazz(ish) blog i’ve not seen before, musica degradata, who shared the show back in 2013 (dead link now).

a little out of alphabetical order (but then i’m going by the first letter of the first word, i.e. cheating anyway), here’s a super show that i downloaded just over a decade ago — the only thing that i have by the reiner heute – ludwig nuss quintet.  the balance among the various instruments is very nice, i.e. it makes me feel that “quintet” doesn’t just reflect the number of musicians.

my favorite of several recordings shared by ‘glasnostrd19′ of tiger okoshi at the willow in somerville, ma.  it’s another of those locations that i vaguely feel that i know just from the recordings there, a topic that i’ve touched on before.  other places in that general neck of the woods would  include the sidedoor jazz club in old lyme, ct and also the ramada inn, schenectady, ny (another tip o’ the hat to the planetfuncamp folks and to csatennis).   little beacons on my mental map of the world, “if i’m ever in massachusetts…”.  back to this show, if you’re on dime, it’s worth doing a search for “okoshi” or “willow”.

you often wonder about the names of groups, where they come from, what they mean, and i’m left wondering in this case.  anyway, a good show for these short, grey days, a bit slow and somber at times.  the white russian 5tet cd was zerafa’s first cd as leader.

i think the band was a version of the lineup on ‘mellow madness’ (1975), based on a japanese bootleg version of this (details in the info file), but possibly the entire crew as the lineup included “and other unknown members”.  super quality, i didn’t notice the fm crackling, but then if you’re “multitasking”, nothing gets done right, eh?  i’ve redone the info file (the full file is in the zip, not below), including comparing the tracks to albums by quincy jones at around the same time.

a low level crackling from poor over the air fm reception is present in places but not very distracting.
allen tarzwell recorded this on his reel-reel and i made a copy on my reel-reel.
transfered to dat in the 1990’s.
lots of little pops were repaired some remain,
one second of damaged tape was removed at 29:56 and about 1/2 second at 30:15,
then the volume and balace adjustemnt all were all done using audacity.
couldn’t track down all the correct song titles.
also there was no exact date noted anywhere but i am almost certain it was from 1975.

first, r.i.p. pat martino.

this show is a bit after nexus, which is recordings of pat martino and jim ridl at the tin angel in the mid-1990’s, in fact there’s only one song in common, ‘recollection’.  i’ve been meaning to upload this for a couple of weeks, but instead it’s been sitting in foobar2000 getting played, must be at least 5 times by now.  between ireland and spain, i get more than my fill of jazz guitar, but this was a bit different.

here’s another show from the eponymous “dc”, upped on dime in 2014.  a lovely recording, i’m kinda surprised at “portable hitachi mono recorder, with manually set levels, and tdk conventional bias cassettes.”  ol’ dc knew their stuff, i guess!

from “dc” our anonymous donor:
oregon, live at the cellar door, washington, dc, october 16, 1976, from the master cassette tapes. the recording was made from the first row of tables, near the low stage, using a portable hitachi mono recorder, with manually set levels, and tdk conventional bias cassettes. this transfer was made in 2013 by playing the master tapes (after the actual cassette reels and tapes were moved to new cassette shells) on an akai gx f31 cassette deck into a pc, where the signal was captured via goldwave. the channel with the strongest signal was copied and the copy was pasted into the opposite channel for true mono sound.

i liked the 2008 show so much i played the 2011 show right after (both included here) and then two more, from 2008 & 2014.  guess i was in a bit of a nicola conte mood.  i’ve  noted the vocalists in the post title as they’re essential to both these shows.  while i wouldn’t describe this as “like pink martini”, if you enjoy p.m. then you might like nicola conte also (such is my hope anyway, which will give another option for music to eat dinner to).

listening to this again, i realized that tracks 5 & 6 from the quasimodo show are both leaves in the wind, which looks like a mistake (though i’ve not done a careful comparison).  great song though!  i’ve left the .zip file & setlist uncorrected, at this point.

one of a number of great shows, mostly from washington dc, shared by ‘carville’ on dime, and originally from “‘dc,’ our anonymous donor”.  although i was living in dc at the time, this is not something that i would have gone to, as i would not have liked it then. i like it more now, especially in person; but with recordings, even live, my tolerance can start to wane, not sure why that is.  but no worry of that with this show, though i did have to put off listening until after work; it’s really something, like so many of the shows from the anonymous and eponymous “dc”.

fun facts:  did you know that ornette coleman & his son denardo coleman (on drums in this recording) played with the grateful dead?

the ensemble was apparently originally billed as the malcolm goldstein-archie shepp ensemble, but shepp did not arrive until the beginning of the fourth and final piece (hence the applause heard then).

unlike the last posting, which really needed my attention, this is one i could listen to closely or let it play gently in the background as we chat away amongst ourselves, as the crowd that night seemed to be doing.  but fortunately that just gives ambience – it’s an excellent audience recording and chock-a-block full of familiar songs.
