this must be one of the spring quartet’s very first concerts, since (thanks, internet!) they started in january 2014.  what can you say about a supergroup?

it’s another off-the-air recording from wwoz-fm in new orleans.  there are a lot in circulation, and they’re always good.  great station.

enjoy.

here’s a show from my old alma mater, with two current favorites jack dejohnette & lester bowie.  ‘nobody’ did some work on this (see notes), before re-seeding it on dime just over 3 years ago.  i think it is better than the previous incarnation, which i also have, so thanks for the work.  actually, i have several other shows from old cabell hall, and they’re all excellent.

betty-carter-1993-10-22-cologne-front-coverthis is the combination of two seeds on dime back in 2010, combined to give what i think is the full show from 1993.  details are in the info file.  about the quality of betty carter, nothing need be said, and her backup is a pretty good lineup too!  it’s all fm-sourced, so the sound is excellent.  so just goodness all around, eh?  this is about my favorite of the betty carter concerts that i’ve heard.

the cd cover pic is based on a screencapture from a video online.

Miles Davis Quintet - Salle Pleyel 3-Nov-1969 - CD Front Insertbetween christmas, new years, a little trip and being incredibily busy, january has been flying by.  so lets start the year off here with a bit more miles davis.  if i can keep miles to below 5% of the posts, then i suppose i’m doing well.

anyway, this has been floating around up on dime since sept 2011 (thanks to matthughen), as a video.  this is the demux of that video.  according to plosin, it is from an ortf tv broadcast.  certainly looks that way, but unfortunately i’m not going to upload the 8.4gb video here… the demuxed audio will have to do.

comments from original (video) info file:
first set is great quality video and audio. the second set is a little rougher video with several
brief dropouts. imho, this does not diminish the viewability of this rare performance. second set
also includes jack on piano and chic playing some drums and double drums as well. i have not seen
another video of this rare phenomenon. unfortunately the mics don’t appear to be dialed in. this
is my final boot liberated from same south american reseller. set lists are from entree. no menus
or chapters; just the complete performance straight through.

cd covers made with ronyasoft cd dvd label maker, v.3.01.32, using screenshots from the video.

MDFwFr1_thumbnailafter checking for new jazz shows on dime, i had a look at the oldest running jazz seed: this show by miles davis is still on dime after almost 9 years (it’ll be 9 years on  17-may-2014).  wow.  i don’t even know who the seeder was — they’re now just listed as “unknown”.  it was an fm broadcast, recorded from the soundboard… the quality is superb.  and late 1970 is a fantastic period for miles, imho.

artwork:  i’ve included cd covers by jamie lochhead, from his site jaime lockhhead.co.uk (see his terms of use).

total time: 63:49 mns

notes:
– this is not taken from the fillmore tree. the fillmore tree version is about 25 mns. this here is almost the complete show, only “directions”, the set-opener is missing: total time is about 64 mns. this fm source sounds great.

– according to p.losin: “the davis septet opened for leon russell and sea train for four nights at the fillmore west, october 15-18 (thursday-sunday). columbia probably recorded these shows, and the fillmore certainly did. none of the recordings of this show that i have heard includes “directions,” the standard set-opener…”
