the first half of this show is mostly all about esther phillips, and  the second half is more chelsea wilson’s own compositions.  the show is a whole lotta fun!  there’s a bit about the band at the time, and pics, on this page about a show she did on 14 sept 2014.

i don’t see a lot of jazz from australia on dime (or i miss it?)… what i do have are mostly female jazz musicians, including shows from the sydney international women’s jazz festival, and — coming back to chelsea wilson — a 2014 recording from the ‘women of soul’ series that she produces.   maybe i’ll give that a listen next, make it a australian soul morning.

original seeder’s comments:
full credit to the band also. i don’t know the names of the individual players otherwise i’d be crediting them on here also. [i’ve identified most of them – pete]
it was a small crowd but a fun show which i’m glad i attended (i was thinking of not going). there were a couple of mistakes/false starts but this didn’t take away from what a very enjoyable show.

chelsea wilson is a melbourne based soul & jazz singer who (after being knocked back by a number of record labels) independently released her debut full length album “i hope you’ll be very unhappy without me” earlier this year which has been getting some serious accolades. (what’s that they say about revenge?)
here’s just some of those accolades.

while this was shared by ‘dandrews’ in august, on dime, i didn’t actually download it until today.  it’s short, but the sound seems very good, and it’s a classic selection.  i also downloaded a longer show (also from 1968) which included an interview – did you know aretha franklin couldn’t read music?  she did it all by ear – but i preferred this one.  i was demuxing this anyway, but (except for the sample) didn’t track this.  enjoy!  and i hope you all had a good christmas & have a happy new year!

comments from video info file:
this is a 1st generation vcr recording of the 26-minute aretha franklin show at berns salonger, stockholm,
and filmed by swedish television.
(note, this is a different performance to the one circulating as an fm audio broadcast, which was recorded
at the show in konserthuset on may 2nd.)
this was taped from a broadcast of the ‘musikbyrån’ tv show in 2000.

please note that there are no index points/track markers on this recording, and no menu either.

classic soul!!!

Jimmy Witherspoon - Estival Jazz 1985_frontso who doesn’t like jimmy witherspoon?  here he is at the estival jazz 1985, one of a series of great seeds on dime (“a swissbird , simplexsimplicissimus & supermax release”).  but i’d never heard of rosay wortham (or, according to discogs.com, more often rozaa wortham).  she’s great, but probably jsut far enough into the ‘soul’ category to escape my rather divided attention.  and internet searches return very little beyond what’s on discogs.  hmmm.  anyway, this show’s a bit hard to classify, some jazz, some soul, some blues, all great.  good “friday late afternoon” music too.

like all the swissbird releases, this is a phenomenal soundboard, i’ve downloaded a number of them from dime (in this case, a reseed by ‘langtang’ in january 2015).  actually, over a couple of days, i downloaded this show along with shows by gal costa (2006); maceo parker & the roots revisited (1993); new york jazz giants (1992); slickaphonics (1988); and patti austin (2004).  someone somewhere was busy, or maybe just trying to keep their ratio above the plimsoll line.

obatik.com has a list of most of the swissbird releases, if you’re curious.  and his comments made me realize that there’ve not been any lately.  wonder what happened to swissbird, simplexsimplicissimus & supermax?
