well, a charles tolliver double-header is a fine way to hit 500 posts!

the first show, from 1969, is a phenomenal recording.  as someone commented on dime, when it was shared a few years ago,

listening now, great stereo sound, good enough for a commercial release.  sounds fantastic, swings like crazy.

i can say the same right now!  and it goes for the second show, from 1971, which is maybe a lot more “tolliver-ish” (yes. btw, i see that the ’69 show is “all compositions  by charles tolliver), and which i think that i prefer.  i’ve been listening to very little except charles tolliver or the radio (which was sadly lacking any charles tolliver!)

btw, we now have a presence on mastodon, @cipjazz@mas.to

here’s the salena jones show that i mentioned back in feb 2018 when i posted an erich kleinschuster show in feb 2018.  i was listening to it again the other day, and again was very taken with it.  it seems a bit of that era too, somehow.

it’s the day for vienna, i guess.  had some trouble finding something that i felt like listening to (i’d been listening to a tom waits show and was thinking of posting it here, but it seems to be both on 100 greatest bootlegs and also on past daily.  sometimes, one little thing…).  but seriously, after listening to tom waits, what did i expect?  doh!

aaaaannyway, this finally caught my eye:  a lovely little two-fer from erich kleinschuster in the orf studios, from late 1969 & early 1970.  ‘rillenheini’ seeded them (separately) on dime in mid-2015, but they go together nicely (and are a bit short, individually).  and the vienna day?  salena jones in vienna & graz from 1973 popped up next somehow.

Monty Alexander 1998-08-22 CD Front Inserti’ve been listening to monty alexander all day, except when talking to people (a lot) or away (a bit).  been working very well for me today.  just… nice.  (probably shouldn’t use that word.  cheerful, maybe?  pleasant without being smooth jazz?  i don’t know.)  this one, the last, got the most smiles. despite which, ‘smile’ is not the sample.

sticking with that “graz” theme, here’s another that i downloaded at around the same time (mid 2011), also from a performance in graz.  but the similarities end there a bit… 11 trombonists vs 2 pianists?  hmmm.  both good, a bit different though.

the announcer does chat a bit between tracks, though, but not too much (unlike, say, most french announcers).
