this bubbled up to the surface a couple of days ago, and i’ve listened to it a few times since.  the info file has one of the best commentaries i’ve read in an info file in a very long time – i’ll quote just a tiny bit, that nicely sums up the secret society (and this recording), with a tip o’ the hat to ‘bombdiggity’

remarkable original compositions, brilliantly arranged and conducted, and quite well played. of particular note to me is david dejesus on the final number.

this likely will appeal to fans of jazz, big band, orchestras, modern composers, new music, and/or classical, and perhaps even those slightly inclined to the avant-garde side of things.

i know, sounds a bit all-things-to-all-people, right?  normally that’s the kiss of death, but not this time.

btw, if you want more (in addition to their albums), here’s a few secret society shows available on the npr website:  darcy james argue’s secret society: newport jazz 2014 and in ‘real enemies,’ darcy james argue confronts a post-truth world  and john ellis, darcy james argue on jazzset.  there may be more, but those are ones that popped up in my searches.

yesterday was al cohn day, i feel as if i’ve listened to every al cohn show that i have (well, a lot anyway!).  i was going to share one of his shows (up next!), but this little jem from jim galloway, featuring al cohn and eddie lockjaw davis, has elbowed its way to the front of the queue!  a woody herman show (also with mr. al cohn) was trying to do the same, but will just have to wait.  anyway, a bit of a busy day at work, but with these shows and the warm sunshine we’ve had, it was a beautiful day.  tip ‘o the hat to ‘jazzrita’ for sharing this.

here’s another, brazilian-flavoured, concert featuring la vie en rose.  this is very baffling, as the name cyrille aimee seems very familiar yet i don’t remember ever listening to this performance.  whatever, it’s a very sweet show, and i particularly liked cyrille’s solo fortunate son, accompany herself via the loop pedal.  i appreciated also the comments from ‘ringfedder’, the taper, that gave a bit of context.

i think this will be the last of the la vie en rose shows, three is enough, at least for this morning.  it was great fun, and unearthed some great performances.  other versions were included in concerts by dee dee bridgewater in 2005 in leverkusen, germany; the frank vignola quintet in 2010 at the phenomenally named “the egg” in albany, ny; jacky terrasson in 2019 at the cloitre des jacobins, toulouse, france; and 3 different performances by madelerine peyroux, in 1996, 2004 & 2007 (she must really like the song!).  textcrawler is the tool i use for searching, but of course only finds shows on my active drives.  “the egg” reminds me of my favorite-named café in brussels, ma folle de soeur; restaurant names in that city are a work of art in their own right.

hello everyone

another wonderful evening of fine jazz at the garde arts center oasis room! i’m not sure what exactly prompted me to go see this show. i’m sure it had nothing to do with the fact that when i opened the flier, my jaw almost dropped to the ground when i saw how gorgeous cyrille looked. i also have a thing for classic guitar and just from the photo in the flier, diego looked like a mad guitarist. i was not disappointed. cyrille’s sultry french accented vocals coupled with diego’s brazilian flamenco style guitar was mesmerizing to say the least.

the oasis room is great for recording to some extent. if the audience could avoid clapping, i’d have little editing to do. as it was however, the audience clapping tends to be louder than the musical passages. consequently, editing of this recording includes attenuating the audience clapping and boosting the volume of the music. the overall levels are not cranked as they would be on some my ‘loud’ recordings because i didn’t want to introduce excess noise. the end result for the most part is a well balanced presentation.

i’d like to reiterate how wonderful it was to see a show here at the oasis room. if you’re from the area, i urge you to check out a show here. i’d hate to see a place like this not be successful due to lack of patronage. the garde arts center and the oasis room (and the kate for that matter) fill a cultural void here in s.e. connecticut left vacant by the pop centric casino scene. please support the local arts. check out the schedule on the garde web site for this season. we have some phenomenal acts coming through, don’t miss it.

enjoy!

here’s another show that popped up on the search for la vie en rose.  very different to the last one.  who doesn’t like piano jazz?  well, i do get tired of that sometimes (hard to believe, eh?), but i never tire of a good piano-violin quartet like this one.  this was shared by ‘jazzrita’, whose fine taste can always be relied upon.

it’s nice that we have choices for high spec recordings — and choices other than the usual giant internet companies (we know who they are).  for example, sandro roy is on qobuz; jermaine landsberger is on both bandcamp and qobuz.  what other platforms do artists use to sell high-quality copies of their albums?  if you were choosing between a purchase available on multiple sites, which would you choose, and why?  (paranoid thought for the day:  why do i think those two sites are not part of the stables belonging to the giant internet companies?)

i was looking for nice covers of la vie en rose today, and ran across a number of nice shows, including this one that nolataper shared a some point.  this is a lot of fun (i must get back to new orleans some day…), and nicely edited (thanks, nolataper, for editing out station ids, and so well!) ms. ketchens seems to be described just as a clarinetist, which is true, but it turns out she’s also a fine singer!  a nice surprise, not having heard this show since i first downloaded it (as is so often the case).  in fairness, this is not my favorite version of the song from the shows i’ve been listening to, but the concert really hit it for me.  there you are, eh?  perhaps we’ll get a few more versions of la vie en rose before this weekend is out…

this is the only trumpet-guitar duo that i remember hearing.  i’ve been listening to the show bit-by-bit over the last 24 hours, as various things have kept me away from the computer (not necessarily a bad thing), and it’s been growing on me.  they take it from one extreme – just guitar – to the other – just trumpet – and back again, which gives the show a nice balance.  sorry about the setlist; there was none and almost every time i try to identify a song, the title is always at the tip of my tongue…

i’ve been listening to the piece by piece series presented by the improvised music company (imc) and triskel.  i’ve been to a number of performances put on by the imc, which i have enjoyed immensely, and these friday concerts are a nice alternative right now.

piece by piece is “a weekly sequence of online solo performances… featuring leading irish improvisers”.  see imc’s piece by piece webpage for links to the performances (all on youtube) and to reflections by the artists.

10 april: shane latimer – guitar/electronics
17 april: nick roth – saxophones & olesya zdorovetska – vocals.
24 april: seán mac erlaine – clarinet/reeds/electronics
1 may: cormac mccarthy – piano
8 may: cora venus lunny – violin/viola
15 may: paul dunlea – trombone
22 may: izumi kimura – piano
29 may: úna monaghan – harp

improvised music company is a music promoter for jazz and ethnic music, and a resource for musicians in ireland.
triskel is the triskel christchurch /arts centre in cork city.

imc and triskel are committed to paying professional fees to artists for their work. If you can help them to continue to support artists in this difficult time, please donate the price of a coffee at https://ko-fi.com/improvisedmusic

[comments from tatadada, the original seeder.  thanks!] a while ago i seeded a rather small part of this, which was all that was broadcasted at that time – but it seems that not only i wrote a letter to the radio station to complain … “all hell broke loose !” is how the radio host described what happened after the show, prompting this re-broadcast of the entire improvisation.
