there are always a bunch of christmas jazz concerts floating around on dime, but this one by the incomparable clare teal is my favorite of the ones that i’ve downloaded.  it’s obvious:  she’s great, and just look at the tunes — a pantheon of christmas classics (her xmas cd is great too! and without the chatter!).  now, if we could just get her to pop over here to dublin… .. .

so, a quick break from basting a turkey… merry christmas, feliz navidad, and so on.

this is a fun show!  and bound to pick you up if you’re feeling a bit blue.  this reminded me of the great spike jones & the city slickers, but  in a small way — after all, a piano trio ain’t an orchestra.  on the other hand, i might put on a recording by hildegard pohl over dinner, but i never would do that with spike jones.  so, and i do mean it… enjoy!

hildegard pohl trio
kellerbuehne, e-werk
erlangen, germany
11 january 2015
“swinging mona lisa”

hildegard pohl – piano, talk
norbert meyer-venus – double bass
yogo pausch – drums

set 1

01. sister sadie (4:55)
02. hildegard spricht (1:36)
03. swan princess (7:35)
04. someday my chopin will come (3:45)
05. wedding song (5:22)
06. hildegard spricht (1:24)
07. tango fuer elise (4:33)
08. hildegard spricht (0:58)
09. satin doll (4:02)
10. hildegard spricht (1:06)
11. miles and more (8:23)
12. wunschlied abstimmung (4:19) *
13. caro mio ben (4:20)

set 2

14. intro -> mona lisa (5:51)
15. jazz waltz (6:48)
16. … (5:45)
17. hildegard spricht (4:18)
18. wunschlied-medley (11:19) *
19. hildegard spricht (1:07)
20. swing in the kitchen (4:41)
21. hildegard spricht -> wilde hilde (5:33)
22. … (6:30) **

1:04:22

* kind of “contest” where only the female members of the audience could write down their “wish-song”
to be played in the second set. during track #17 the votes were picked from a basket by the female
members again and 8 of those were played in the following song as a medley.

** from the upcoming program of next year, a composition from johann sebastian bach.

aiwa cm30 mic -> olympus ls11 (at wav 16/44) -> we transfer-> my hd -> audacity (edit, volume balance + boost only) -> wav 16/44 -> tlh8 -> flac -> dime -> your ears and mind…
recorded at first seated row a bit right of center. excellent recording with one minor disturbance: due to the accidental low volume setting, this has a bit of hiss on the interludes.
a few nice pics are included as well. all thanks straight to nuernberg to the fuzzman for taping.

i’m not familiar with this kind of music, but i had a few smiles on the variations of these master musicians on themes of both classic music and jazz. hope you’ll enjoy it, too. sb.

i was listening to something else which was very good, but i got tired of it.  looking for something to cheer myself up, i noticed this show, or rather i noticed “albany, ny” and thought to myself ah, that must be one of those fantastic shows from upstate new york that csatennis has shared!  be just the thing!  and indeed it was.  csatennis had shared this in two parts, which i’ve combined into one folder (with combined info, ffp and md5 files also).  from his comments (not to mention the line ups on other recordings he’s shared), there must have been a whole busload of italian-american hard boppers in the general new york area.

charles mcpherson
albany, ny, usa
october 26, 1975

charles mcpherson – alto
frank stagnitta – piano
mike bochichio – bass
ron davis – drums

02. on the trail 14:04
03. blues i 15:46
04. blues ii 1:16
05. desafinado 11:38

part 2

02. body and soul 10:58
03. stella by starlight 14:02
04. closer 6:29
48:27

comments from csatennis:
if you are a mcpherson fan, this is indispensible. i have a lot of his commercially produced cds, and this
easily ranks with the best of them and better than most. the sound quality is exceptionally good.

if you think the piano player’s name is a pseudonym, it isn’t. this guy is for real, and you’ve probably
never heard of him. stagnitta could really play in those days. a resident of syracuse and graduate of
craine school of music, he was a brilliant player and student of both jazz and classical music. he obviously
had chops to spare. unfortunately, he had some emotional issues in his life and a year or so later he disappeared
from the albany area and moved to new york. he played a lot with his friend, tenor player sal nistico. according to others who have posted on dime to volume 1 of this recording, he has returned to his hometown of syracuse.

bocchicio was a well liked bass player from the nyc area and ron davis played regularly with arnie lawrence, bill watrous
and other well known nyc boppers.

the rhythm section simply kicks butt.

as for mcpherson, he is simply on fire. i think that he realized that he was playing with a group of talented
strangers and he had every intention of keeping them in line and showing them who was boss. watching this group, it was
obvious the sidemen loved the ride. so will you.

accordion & piano or violin are both such lovely combinations.  this show is mostly compositions by either peirani or wollny, leavened with a bit of other stuff, including an old favorite oh shenandoah, which a close friend of mine sang a cappella for us recently, at a huge thanksgiving dinner he was hosting (a whole story in itself, that).  i think he keeps it in his (amateur) repertoire just for us.  anyway, the accordion always reminds me of my father, who played accordion a bit.  the family story goes that my grandparents tried to give his older brother (my late uncle) music lessons, but with no success, and they decided there was no point in giving music lessons to children.  my grandfather being tone-deaf might have played a small role, if you ask me.  so my father bought an accordion and learned how to play on his own.

another one that’s been floating in my playlist for a while (n.b. this is 2 posts in 2 days – go back a day if you missed it!).  this was (re)seeded on dime by senormogul9 just over a year ago.  their comments (below) need nothing added about the show, and are a good insight into first months on dime (and its ilk):  seeing a feast to which you have limited or, perhaps for a while, no access.  been there, done that.  good choice, senormogul9, hope my d/l helped.

greetings soundfolk! it’s freddie hubbard day at the house and i’ll conclude the day with freddie in front of the classic miles sidemen of his 60’s quintet. essentially, we have the vsop band here, minus wayne shorter, making it verrrry “vsop-ish”. it’s a good fm capture overall straight off the queen mary.

i remember getting this very well, i got it from awesome dimer glasnostrd19 back in july 2013. i had just joined dime a few months earlier and when i joineed, i knew nothing about things like “share ratios”. so, when i got on, i downloaded a ton of absolutely weird, esoteric shit, and suddenly, i couldn’t download anymore! i couldn’t figure it out, unbeknownst to me, i had neglected to read the fine print! 🙂 so, i had to wait for enough people to be enticed to download my “weird, esoteric shit” to get me to the 0.25 line where i could begin again.

that took several months, and finally i got to download this. so, enjoy this! thanks ian!

i’ll give you a sample, enjoy!

this is one that’s been sitting in a tab in foobar2000 for around 2 months, waiting for me to upload it.  listening to it again, i agree with “past me”.  and what about studio 104 in paris?  or the rolf liebermann studio, in hamburg? and a few others… when you see one of those places listed, do you give a little smile of recognition for a place you’ve never been, maybe never even seen a photo of?

here’s another bonus from my old archives, a double header from the 2002 ucla jazz/reggae festival.  they were originally shared together on dime back in 2005 and have been hiding away together on a cd for a number of years.  well worth a dusting off, especially as the cd is still readable (what is the lifespan of those things?).  a good day at ucla.

as yahoo is dropping its groups, i’ve been looking at a lot of shows that i’ve had for a very long time, while i can still research their provenance a little bit.  like this one here, that i downloaded from dime in november 2005.  i’ve always been a big fan of yusef lateef, and this show would have been from about when (or a bit earlier?) i started listening to his albums.   as you’ll see from the full info file, there was also an additional track from 1966, which i’ve not included.  btw, if a musician’s name is not a link, it’s because i could not find a website or other page of theirs (e.g. on social media).
