yesterday, i played dexter gordon all day long, and this show (or rather, shows: with a companion performance by stan getz) really struck my fancy.  it’s not as originally shared by ‘itzero’ on dime in oct 2010, as i’ve added the song titles to the filenames (“05.flac” is so prosaic!), and having done that, went ahead & split the two performances into two separate folders.  so, here’s a little thanksgiving treat for y’all.  enjoy!

meanwhile, it’s been a busy old time around here:  pharoah sanders last week, madeleine peyroux on tuesday and camille o’sullivan this saturday.  it never rains but it pours, i guess.  pharoah sanders himself was excellent, but the rest of the group without him didn’t thrill me (and the sound seemed off, particularly for the band); still, even with his rests, it was a pretty astounding concert for a man in his mid 70s.  madeleine peyroux’s show, on the other hand, had no sound issues and she seemed to be having a lot of fun – i know the audience did.  and next, it’s high hopes for saturday at the olympia & camille o’sullivan, who i saw in her amazing version of shakespeare’s ‘rape of lucrece’ (do not miss it, if you ever, ever get a chance).  then next week, it’s back to the local jazz scene — which is great!  i only wish i had time to go to more shows.

i downloaded a show by eddy louiss today  or was it yesterday, which really knocked my socks off.  a quick search turned up a few shows with eddy louiss as a sideman, including this one which also knocked my socks off, with both him and rené thomas in getz’s quartet.  it’s a killer combination, and there are a number of compositions by louiss or thomas, according to the setlist.  ¿que mas hay?

note:  setlist below corrected below only, not in the info file.

i’m on a little mini-break, this august bank holiday weekend, and am feeling great between the break, seeing old friends, the amazing weather, etc etc etc.  the trusty usb drive, however, is gathering dust at home as i forgot it.  fortunately, a rather embarrassing number of usb “thumb” drives in the car manage between them to have something to play, including this extremely good show from 1966.  i downloaded it 5 years ago this thursday, when jazamo reseeded it on dime.  comments below are jazamo’s to which i have nothing to add.

jazamo show notes 8/9/2013:
i was listening to this the other day, just a fantastic set! classic stan in the bossa nova era, add to that the sweet vocals of astrud gilberto, early gary burton, & legendary drumer roy haynes, wow! great sound and performance, this re-broadcast show is re-seeded it’s original mp2 format, nothing touched, and micro-sized to fit any dime ratio (even the spank-ees). all praise goes out to the original seeder hamhen for his perfect capture, and as always your comments are welcome!

did i mention it sounds great? i have seen only one other show from the bossa era for stan (other than his commercial releases), and that one (jazz door carnegie hall 1964) didn’t include astrud gilberto. she has had very few show pass thru here, all have had weak sound quality. this show was recorded at the end of the bossa era, as stan would go on to a new quartet with chick corea a year later. thanks again to hamhen for his fine capture.

CD Front Inserti was listening to some stan tracey earlier today, until i put on a show with some bad distortion.  so i moved up the alphabet to stan getz and hit paydirt with this show from april 1960, in amsterdam,  that ‘frekem’ shared on dime back in oct 2010.  stan getz died back in 1991, but his daughter apparently maintains a website – check it out.

stan getz quartet
concertgebouw
amsterdam, netherlands
10 april 1960

stan getz (ts), jan johansson (p), ray brown (b), ed thigpen (d);
johansson died in a car accident en route to a concert in 1968, 37 years of age.

track list:
01 station announcements
02 out of nowhere
03 the thrill is gone
04 lover come back to me
05 pammy’s tune
06 spring can really hang you up the most
07 gone with the wind
08 cherokee
09 station announcements

fm > tape > recording, tracking and editing wav file in audacity > cd-r > wav > tlh (flac 8, align on sector boundaries)

audio quality: a- (fm)

original seeder comments:
as a closure of the so-called vara jazz week, “norman granz jatp presents the poll winners” concert packages took place in 1960 in the netherlands, both in the scheveningen kurhaus (set of evening concerts, 9 april) and in the amsterdam concertgebouw (set of after midnight concerts, so 10 april).

concerts of peterson/getz/miles (performing in that order) were broadcast live from scheveningen (miles) and from amsterdam (peterson). the amsterdam concert of getz was taped to be broadcast on a later date (because at the time there was no permission for live broadcasts after 1 am!).

the present tracks are from a re-broadcast i’ve taped some five or so years ago. i kept the opening and closing radio announcements by bassist hans mantel.

enjoy!
