here’s a bumper 2-day concert recorded by george van eps (one of the guest musicians) and shared by his (nephew? it’s often so hard to tell from usernames).  such a lovely combination too – piano, cornet, clarinet, guitar and sax plus of course bass & drums, don’t forget them.  real classic stuff, and if you’re in the mood for it, four and a half hours isn’t too much at all!  to the contrary, too much is not enough as i’ve always said.  hard to find links for most of these guys, they were too old, too long before the internet, but most of them pop up on the pete fountain site, which is worth a look in its own right, or other dixieland sites.   i’ve done a little rearranging of files & folders, as noted below.  enjoy!  and here’s hoping that ‘kovinis’ shares some more of his uncle’s recordings one of these days!

comments from ‘kovinis’ (seeder on dimeadozen)

“i decided to share some of the recordings of my late uncle, george van eps.
this is only disk 4 of a 6 cd set of a concert that spanned two days. i will
upload the rest of this concert if there is any interest. i also have many
other live recordings of my uncle from many different venues and various
musicians. these also await your requests.

any help with setlists is appreciated. i hope you enjoy this. the audio
quality is quite nice.”

changes
– combined folders into two instead of six
– but no file renaming: with the numbered subfolders, the tracks should play in order

despite having recordings of several shows by the moutin brothers, they only floated into my active notice recently.  here’s a less-recent show, from marciac 2010.  this is a very good recording, but seems to fade in which suggests that we’re missing part of the show. actually, the moutin brothers and the belmondo brothers have both recently shot up to my favorites in french jazz.  have to share a belmondo show as well, after i’m back from my little vacation.

this looks like a very interesting pair of series on jazz, here from wtju-fm,  uva, charlottesville, va.

jazz at 100

in early 1917, the original dixieland jazz band made the first jazz recording. over the next 100 years we have heard transcendent leaps of creativity and staggering virtuosity; we have experienced the music of crushing pain, breathless romance, anger, exhilaration and humor. “jazz at 100” is that story – one hundred years of jazz recordings – in 100 one-hour programs that will present representative music from a century of recorded jazz history. the series will explore the broad sweep of that narrative; its representative and its idiosyncratic players; its durable movements and dead ends; its popular recordings and rarities.

and it’s continuation series, jazz at 100 today!

because we have virtually instant access to 100 years of recorded jazz, documenting broad sweeps of creativity and innovation, it can be difficult for today’s working musicians to be heard. a successor to the celebrated jazz at 100 series, jazz at 100 today! gives voice to the current jazz scene and celebrates the incredible music of the living treasures who keep pushing boundaries while standing on the shoulders of giants.
