to make space, i have been archiving some shows that i have only in video format and demuxing them.  here’s one that, somewhat unusually, had audio in a lossless format (still a large enough file!).  been a while since i’ve posted any miles davis up here.  and almost as long without listening to any of his music from this period, so giving this a good listen was a lot of fun.

it’s mostly a very good recording, but has a few issues:  first, volume drops (and lost one track, i think?) for a brief period in the middle.  second, while it played with no problem in foobar2000, the .flac & underlying .wav show up as corrupt or truncated.  third, it’s not tracked (i’ve arbitrarily provided a sample of the first 10 minutes, without regard to the music).  finally, the date is questionable: i think it may have been a day or two later, as far as i can tell from the internet, but i’ve left the date as it was.

flac was “truncated or otherwise corrupt” when tested with tlc. decoding also returned
errors. the file plays fine, despite the issues (at least in foobar2000).

no setlist in the original seed. lineup is a guess posted on the dime tracker webpage) guess posted on the dime tracker webpage.

the original info file notes that the “first 15m35s missing from video. slideshow filler used. sync issues at times due to tape stretching”.
so there are probably some built-in audio issues.

here’s one from the nrk archives, and a video to boot.  this is a phenomenal video (except for a short glitch in the middle), so i’m making an exception to my ‘no videos on account of they’re too large’ for the moment.

note:
– this was also seeded on dimeadozen (torrent #556735), but this .flv file was
downloaded directly from the nrk.no website, not via the seed on dimeadozen.
– as noted on the dime seed, ‘the abrupt interuption of tv translation is between
00:32:59 and 00:35:34 during “what i say”. a part of don alias conga solo is
missing.’ from the way the picture & sound fade back in, it looks like a problem
with the original recording &/or transmission. i’d like to remove that 2-1/2
minutes, but don’t know how without transcoding; maybe someday.
– setlist & line-up are from the dime seed, which took it from the peter losin site

MDkyoto64Frwe just had a great long-weekend (for lunar new year) in kyoto, japan.  fantastic city, which you should visit if you’re going to japan.

anyway, here’s an old recording made in kyoto, from miles davis’ 1964 japan tour.  i’ve got 3 different versions of this, and had a lot of difficulty choosing which one to post here.  there’s another version (in mp3) on bigozine2.com, which is also where the cd covers come from (except on the front cover, i removed “mp3 version”).

Miles Davis Quintet - Salle Pleyel 3-Nov-1969 - CD Front Insertbetween christmas, new years, a little trip and being incredibily busy, january has been flying by.  so lets start the year off here with a bit more miles davis.  if i can keep miles to below 5% of the posts, then i suppose i’m doing well.

anyway, this has been floating around up on dime since sept 2011 (thanks to matthughen), as a video.  this is the demux of that video.  according to plosin, it is from an ortf tv broadcast.  certainly looks that way, but unfortunately i’m not going to upload the 8.4gb video here… the demuxed audio will have to do.

comments from original (video) info file:
first set is great quality video and audio. the second set is a little rougher video with several
brief dropouts. imho, this does not diminish the viewability of this rare performance. second set
also includes jack on piano and chic playing some drums and double drums as well. i have not seen
another video of this rare phenomenon. unfortunately the mics don’t appear to be dialed in. this
is my final boot liberated from same south american reseller. set lists are from entree. no menus
or chapters; just the complete performance straight through.

1984-06-24 TicketStubup on dime, plaz_restore has been seeding a 22-part “miles in france” series (most [all?] of the shows were recorded by ‘looping’). part 7 will be missing — it was released on a pay-per-view and won’t be allowed on dime (nor here).  this series has been around before, but i’ve tended not to listen to 1980’s miles davis (makes you wonder, doesn’t it?) so for me these shows are new & the music less familiar than miles’ older material.  anyway, this post is a ‘happy new year’ for my friends pete & karen and also steve w., all fans of miles (and of new orleans jazzfest, come to think of it).

i’ll be putting up the setlists and links bit-by-bit, all here in this post (for an easy one-stop-shop). the setlists will all be copied completely unchanged from the info files included with the seeds.  done!

they’re very nice recordings (been listening to a lot of these), a real tip ‘o the hat to ‘looping’.  i think that it’s interesting to hear a sequence of several shows on consecutive nights (well, it can be sometimes, and this is definitely one of those times).

here’s another nice miles davis show, from his 1967 tour.  it was reseeded on dime last november, but i downloaded this copy in 2010.  like the last miles show, i’ve been relistening to them as i upload them here…. been another miles davis couple of days around here!

all tracks were issued as a single title, ‘untitled medley’.

fm> ?> cd> soundforge (rebanding of tracks)> dbpoweramp> flac (level 6)> dime> your ears

here is another concert from the 1967 tour, a few days after rotterdam. the duet introduction to ’round midnight is fascinatingly different and equally beautiful. davis and herbie hancock clearly experimented with this opening each night. this concert ends with “masqualero,” which is more usually associated, i think, with the electric miles that is a few years away. all told, extraordinary music. i’ve pasted below the original info file, and as always, i am deeply grateful to the original seeder.

fyi, video footage of two dates from this tour, stockholm and karlsruhe, are included in columbia’s gargantuan box set, “the complete columbia album collection.”

last week, i was listening to a lot of miles davis from 1966 & 1967.  ok, i’ll admit it:  with miles after around 1970, i don’t always get it.  there.  in any event, those were some great shows on my little ‘miles davis mid-sixties’ day, so here’s one of them.  if i get ambitious, maybe another to come.

on the seed back in 2008 when i downloaded this, the seeder newplanet7 said

losin calls this an audience recording, but it sounds more like a board.
http://www.plosin.com/milesahead/sessions.aspx?s=660521

but actually losin describes it as a “soundboard recording (b-)”, which sounds right to me.  i’m not listening on the worlds best sound system, but i’d have put it more like “soundboard (a-)”, myself.

i think that this was also bootlegged by a european label “sunburn recordings” at some point but hasn’t been officially released that i am aware.

MDFwFr1_thumbnailafter checking for new jazz shows on dime, i had a look at the oldest running jazz seed: this show by miles davis is still on dime after almost 9 years (it’ll be 9 years on  17-may-2014).  wow.  i don’t even know who the seeder was — they’re now just listed as “unknown”.  it was an fm broadcast, recorded from the soundboard… the quality is superb.  and late 1970 is a fantastic period for miles, imho.

artwork:  i’ve included cd covers by jamie lochhead, from his site jaime lockhhead.co.uk (see his terms of use).

total time: 63:49 mns

notes:
– this is not taken from the fillmore tree. the fillmore tree version is about 25 mns. this here is almost the complete show, only “directions”, the set-opener is missing: total time is about 64 mns. this fm source sounds great.

– according to p.losin: “the davis septet opened for leon russell and sea train for four nights at the fillmore west, october 15-18 (thursday-sunday). columbia probably recorded these shows, and the fillmore certainly did. none of the recordings of this show that i have heard includes “directions,” the standard set-opener…”

there was a seed today of  miles davis, 1964-07-12 in tokyo, which i have already.  but that got me pulling out some older miles…  here’s a show from amsterdam in 1957, very nice, that was shared by “ubu”.

it’s apparently a well-known bootleg (lonehill); the version shared here having been speed-corrected by “dr goody”.

from halowdance & goody notes:  “amsterdam concert” is a rare live miles davis recording from 1957.  this album, one of the least known recordings of miles davis, was recorded at the concertgebouw in amsterdam on december 8, 1957, a couple of days after the recording of the movie soundtrack “ascenseur pour l’échafaud.” on this concert, miles didn’t play with his regular quintet, but with the same line-up he used for the recording of “ascenseur pour l’échafaud.” it features barney wilen on tenor saxophone, rené urtreger on piano, pierre michelot on bass and kenny clarke on drums.
