time for something a little lighthearted jazz theatre.  dr. pinch himself is a bit over the top, layering on his character a bit thick, but what can you expect from “a minor character from the comedy of errors“?  and the pinchtones are marvelous.  they’d be a fun band to have at a garden party, if you lived in los angeles and had lots of money.  or at a wedding, except the doctor would no doubt try to steal the show…

another one that i ran across while tidying up a bit.  this is great!  going to have to put a copy of this in my car.  tried to buy the cd from their website, but i don’t believe they really ship to korea for free & couldn’t find how to contact them.  i’ll try again later…

i was sorry to read on their website that slim richey, the guitarist, passed away in may of this year.  my condolences.  however, the jitterbug vipers are still performing (only in the austin area, in case you need a good reason to go there), but with a new lineup.  and to think that i’ll be in transit through dallas/fortworth next month… no, probably a bit too far to go during my layover.

LillianBoutteComboZaire_w_PeeWeeEllis 2012-06-27_screenshothere’s one that was shared by ‘doyadig’ back in june 2012 (actually just 2 days after the show).  a very nice recording that sort of knocked me back… i listen to almost everything that i get (so re-listens are not that common), and this one was one of those rare “wow, if i’d ‘a heard this, i’d ‘a remembered it”.  there are a couple of very short avi files (shot with a smartphone) that are nice as well, but the music is all flac of course.

and what about my break, mentioned in my last post… ah, the magic of ssd drives, and remembering that i had one just in time to throw a quick and fairly random selection of stuff on to it, particularly shows that i didn’t remember.  a strategy that paid off, say i.

as doyadig said, hope you enjoy!

transfer: hd > cdwav (track splits) > wavepad sound editor (downsampling/fades) > tlh level 6 (encoding/fingerprints) > utorrent 3.1.3

taper: doyadig
position: 2 meters from right speakers
sound quality: i think i found the sweet spot on this one, and very little crowd noise

file size: 828 mb

i went a little offtrack from my usual tastes with this one, but i didn’t feel like staying at home the other night.  so i decided to visit this years’ jazzascona, which used to be called new orleans fest, and glad i did so.

actually, it was the presence of pee wee ellis as guest which convinced me to get on the half hour train from my place.  i missed him about a month ago when i thought he’d be backing cheikh lo at winterthurs’ afro-pfingsten, but the senegalese brought an all african band instead.

very enjoyable little show, i was right in front and the audience was very well “behaved”.  most festival visitors were sweating inside the main stage because irma thomas was performing at the same time.

included in the folder two short clips i took with my pocket camera.

hope you enjoy
doyadig

BigBadVoodooDaddy_2010 01-01_picas so often, a post of something that i’ve been listening to lately.  i’ve downloaded several bbvd live shows, and this one has a better sound  (pretty good, actually, being fm-sourced) than most of them.

the files for download are labelled 1-jan-2010, but if you listen to it, they get to midnight and auld lang syne towards the end of the show, so it really should be 31-dec-2009.  but…  i downloaded them like that, and didn’t [bother to] change it either on the files, the .zip or even on this posting.  picky picky picky.

i’ve included the cd covers that ‘fastone’ posted in a comment when ‘scooter123’ shared this on dime back in late 2010.

kind of in the mood for some ‘gypsy jazz’ today, this is about the third (shortish) show i’ve listened to this morning, and the best so far.

actually, i’m working my way through all the “hot club” concerts that i have copies of…. hot club d’autriche (this one), hot club de zazz, hot club of cowtown (two shows), hot club of san francisco, one that’s just labelled ‘hot club’, the hot swing trio.  hmmmm.  not sure i’ll make it through all of them today or perhaps even at all before feeling like a change.

anyway, this is a great show, and the original notes claim it’s even played on a stradivarius.

[update 2017-01-15:  i had archived this some time ago, and in checking this before re-uploading, i found that this show – or parts of it – may since have been issued 2012 on eagle records, as the abc & d of boogie woogie – live in paris.  discogs.com lists ‘live in paris’, noting that it was “recorded between 7th and 11th september 2010 at duc des lombards, paris”.  so… the following is no longer available here.]

this is something that i picked up back in september 2010, and that is always a favorite of mine whenever a little boogie woogie is called for. recorded from french radio by metro_cubo, it has the inevitable talkative dj, but at least he doesn’t talk over the music (as some of them do… what is it with french dj’s? they love the sound of their own voices). anyway, it’s a fantastic recording.
