i seem to be on a bit of an italian jazz kick right now, with shows by mario pavone, mauro negri and now mauro verrone.  this was shared by the prolific survivor69, who has some interesting comments below.  i recently got around to setting up streaming from my computer in my office to the living room, so now i can play things like this over dinner.  lovely — and in this case, i’m sure it will be better received than what i chose last night.  or that might have been due to the crappy tv speakers, in which case perhaps my streaming efforts have been for naught.

** update: for some reason, only the first 5 tracks (counting the intro) made it into the zip file — it bombed during the 4th actual track.  i’ve uploaded a new zip, with all 9 tracks **

mauro verrone quartet [con cicci santucci]

recorded at casa del jazz, roma, italy, on friday 18.march.2016

mauro verrone, alto saxophone
andrea beneventano, pianoforte
paride furzi, basso
massimiliano de lucia, drums
with guest cicci santucci, trumpet

quite classic bop from this massimo urbani emule… most compostions are verrone’s, except where noted, but indeed they mostly are standard tune reworked in some way (ie track4 comes from naima, and track6 is almost same title, track7 comes from love for sale, and read track8 the other way round…)
also included in this folder as track00 a radio introduction with bio notes and commentaries – this intro runs for 3’34”, you can skip downloading it if you don’t understand italian.

(00 radio introduction by pino saulo)
1- tema di aldo
2- cool river [beneventano]
3- thought of night
4- a quiet place
5- arietis [freddie hubbard]

7- sale for love
8- navarac
9- radio outro 0.36

running time : 78’48” (excluding radio intros)
with radio intro and outro it would be 82’58”

norma winstone uses her voice like an instrument in this concert, very pure singing that just seems to float on and on.  everytime i listen to her, i ask myself why i don’t listen to her more.  music like this always seems very contemplative to me, and the danger listening to it is that your mind will wander & you’ll end up missing it, floating away, which is not such a bad thing, and if you drift off… well, that’s the finest sleep available.

after listening to this show, reading that tony allen is an “afrobeat” pioneer wasn’t that surprising (though i’d definitely call this jazz, not afrobeat).  i enjoyed this so much that i then listened to another 2 or 3 tony allen shows, but ended up back giving this show another listen, and sharing it up here. not the first time this sort of thing has happened.

i do like the sweet sound of the clarinet, and here it is nicely paired with the vibraphone & pianoforte (maybe “pair” isn’t the right word) in a selection of benny goodman tunes.  benny goodman! what’s not to like?  i’m sure i’ve heard clarinet & vibraphone together before, but am drawing a blank… be that (& my memory) as it may be, it’s a lovely combination, both having such round mellow tones, and the pianoforte adds a sharp spikiness, a tart ingredient keeping the dish from being too sweet.  the original seeder, ‘survivor69’ warns about few transmission dropouts, but i think it’s ok obviously.

happy st. patrick’s day!

well, this is a tribute to benny goodman, so there is not much to sasy – all tracks are announced by dulbecco – warning: a few transmission dropouts were unfortunately featured all along the broadcast, all of them dropouts have been edited out, but you can still hear the transition glitch somewhere on theses tracks. the dj mentions this problem during the radio outro, saying that many listeners were complaining for the (many) dropouts, but from the studio he could not perceive anything. also included in the folder, marked as track 00, a radio introduction in italian with bio notes and commentaries – this intro runs for 4’23”, you can skip downloading it if you don’t understand italian.

so we’re all hunkered down, aren’t we?  arthur’s has cancelled all shows, not that anyone would have gone.  i’ve cancelled a trip.  a good time to listen to some jazz at home.  hope you’re in the mood for a bit of brass:  saxes, trumpet, trombone and more.  and once again, led by a drummer.  enjoy!

notes from show announcement:
mario pavone, a bassist and composer, has collaborated with both legendary innovators
and today’s most respected young musicians to consistently define the cutting edge of jazz for the past 40 years.
pavone has anchored the trios of paul bley (1968-72), bill dixon (1980’s),
and the late thomas chapin (1990-97), and co-led a variety of notable ensembles.
unlike most artists whose careers span five decades, his most recent recordings are his most widely acclaimed,
appearing on best-of-the-year lists from slate.com, allaboutjazz.com, allaboutjazz-new york, coda,
the village voice, and the new york times among others.
enjoy!

aaand we’re back!  actually, still insanely busy, but all work & no play…  anyway, here’s a fun bit of piano jazz that was up on dime a few years ago, the sort of thing that reminds you why piano jazz is so enduring, and with a number of old favorites (including one of mine:  tea for two).  oh, and nhop on bass & art taylor on drums didn’t hurt either!  one caveat, there is a bit of fm hiss.  didn’t notice it until i put on the headphones; seems to come and go.

despite being so busy, it’s not been all work — i’ve also found time to get out a bit, including last wednesday for a night of john coltrane, presented by four exceptional irish jazz musicians.  set one was a selection of coltrane’s compositions, and set two was ‘a love supreme’, played right through.  it was phenomenal.  when they finished, there was that little silence before the clapping starts, which you only get when something was really above and beyond.  i felt as if i had been put through the wringer.  a big tip o’ the hat to ronan guilfoyle (bass), michael buckley (sax), conor guilfoyle (drums), leopoldo osio (piano).
