there was a seed today of  miles davis, 1964-07-12 in tokyo, which i have already.  but that got me pulling out some older miles…  here’s a show from amsterdam in 1957, very nice, that was shared by “ubu”.

it’s apparently a well-known bootleg (lonehill); the version shared here having been speed-corrected by “dr goody”.

from halowdance & goody notes:  “amsterdam concert” is a rare live miles davis recording from 1957.  this album, one of the least known recordings of miles davis, was recorded at the concertgebouw in amsterdam on december 8, 1957, a couple of days after the recording of the movie soundtrack “ascenseur pour l’échafaud.” on this concert, miles didn’t play with his regular quintet, but with the same line-up he used for the recording of “ascenseur pour l’échafaud.” it features barney wilen on tenor saxophone, rené urtreger on piano, pierre michelot on bass and kenny clarke on drums.

i listen to a lot of jazz singers.  mostly women, of course:  both as i like female jazz vocalists and also as that seems to be what’s going most of the time.  but this show turned up, with john pizzarelli singing, when i was tidying up my disk drive.  i downloaded it from dime in april this year, thanks to “spokenmagic” who seeded it and described it as one of his (or her? these tapers are mostly men, to stick with the gender theme for a second) best recordings of all time.  and it is really good, except for being recorded at much much too low a volume.

so turn it up, kick back, and enjoy a change of pace!

i listen to music while i work, practically nonstop as i work from home and there is nobody to be bothered.  it’s become sort of a measure of how busy i am, i think — if too busy to put on something new when the last selection ran out, then i’m pretty busy.  sometimes, i’ll just queue up several concerts, maybe a whole day of one artist maybe a selection of shows by different artists, and just let it run.  but even that doesn’t work: conference calls, speaker phone, i end up having to stop the music, and we’re back to the sort of measurement again. as my daughter (then four) said, when asked to do something, “too busy, too busy”.  i suppose this’ll all change next year when we’re home in dublin again.

[update 2017-01-15:  i had archived this some time ago, and in checking this before re-uploading, i found that this show – or parts of it – may since have been issued 2012 on eagle records, as the abc & d of boogie woogie – live in paris.  discogs.com lists ‘live in paris’, noting that it was “recorded between 7th and 11th september 2010 at duc des lombards, paris”.  so… the following is no longer available here.]

this is something that i picked up back in september 2010, and that is always a favorite of mine whenever a little boogie woogie is called for. recorded from french radio by metro_cubo, it has the inevitable talkative dj, but at least he doesn’t talk over the music (as some of them do… what is it with french dj’s? they love the sound of their own voices). anyway, it’s a fantastic recording.

16 tracks, but unfortuntately no setlist

so i was thinking about a 1964 mingus show in stuttgart, germany, both because i’ve always really liked that show and because i was just in stuttgart on business, the week before last.  it was a good trip, k. and i pitched a course for the second of three times, got to see a little of the city center, etc etc.

anyway, i was again thinking about uploading that show to dime, where i’ve always been reluctant to do so.  both as it is so incomplete and also as i’ve never been sure where it came from.

but perhaps some nice soul has uploaded a more complete copy to dime?  and indeed they have… back in may 2011, a series of 4 shows from mingus’ 1964 tour were uploaded.  so both problems solved.  how did i miss that?

charles mingus – 1964-04-12, oslo, norway
charles mingus – 1964-04-13, stockholm, sweden (two versions!)
charles mingus – 1964-04-16, bremen, germany
charles mingus – 1964-04-28, stuttgart, germany

for today, i’m still listening to my sadly incomplete version of the stuttgart tour (yes, it held up well to my memory of it), but tomorrow’s going to be a mingus kind of a day.

and i’m not going to miss that!

the more complete version still didn’t have a.t.f.w.u.s.a., so i’ve added that here from an a copy that i picked up a few years ago.
