well, we move on now to heinz sauer in a duo with michael wollny, although sure, isn’t a pianist almost like having two or three musicians sometimes?  they’ve played together a lot as a duo & have a cd (don’t explain) that is worth a look if you like this.  i skipped the interview as always, but then immediately fell right in love with the first track & never looked back.  what else can i add?  enjoy.

first this show by the harry greene trio, and then we’ll have duos by heinz sauer & michael wollny shortly.  it was lucky running across these two shows at almost the same time.  they went together well, and hopefully for you too.  harry greene must have been quite young – the photo (of the same lineup) is from a ticketing site, for a 2019 show; it looks like a promo photo, and is undated.  this show today is probably from 2017, but it might have been 2016 (the folders for the 2 sets are named 2016; everything else is 2017).  it’s a high quality “audience” recording.

it wasn’t until i began looking into this that i realized it had been  shared not only on dime but also on inconstant sol (which you should look at if unfamiliar with), but doesn’t seem to have been available for a while (?).  which is a shame because it really is such a phenomenal show.  so here it is, yet again!  inconstant sol had a nice commentary on this, btw.

i also found that it’s available (as a bootleg, as far as i can tell) on a japanese site, where someone added

although it is an album named don cherry, it is an old & new dreams mentz formed under the gate of ornet coleman when he saw personel?i also play natural day tunes?overall, it’s a great performance, but the white eyebrows are drums’ ed blackwell’s play?you can listen to drumming like a japanese child, and it feels irresistible?blackwell himself seems to have heard of japanese ? children?this play convinced him to be the unmistakable and unique jazz giant?i listened to blackwell’s play a lot, but i wonder if it’s the best take to play here?

thanks, machine translation!  and may we always listen to drumming like a japanese child.

in my high school’s artroom above the blackboard, in the mid/late 1970s, someone (i think we can figure out who) had written “bob doyle says more grateful dead!”).  words to live by, certainly, and in that same vein:  more don cherry!

just a quick posting of a show i was listening to yesterday.  if i read the equipment right, it was recorded off the air via an fm receiver onto an olympus camera.  sure, why not?  it worked well anyhow, and nice of the “steven” to share it not being into jazz (unlike all of you).   no setlist or lineup, unfortunately (i am trying to find those; if not, know that i’m rubbish at setlists), but a lovely hour of music from jazz middelheim.  i hope to get to middelheim this year but don’t expect it’ll work out; maybe 2024.

where did i just see bern nix?  i thought it was dime, but no, so maybe it was something on mastodon?  anyway, i brushed off a few old shows that’ve been lurking in the vaults, and here’s one of them.  smashing stuff.  i have to look into jim nolet now.

unfortunately, i’ve missed downloading a couple of ellen christi shows, but that’s ok, i’m sure i can find some of her cd’s for sale.  though, with the range of styles she can (and, apparently, will) sing, it remains to be seen if i will have chosen well in my purchase.  i find this very hard to describe, but there’s a sample as alway.  if you like this, a venue called roulette, in brooklyn, has a recording of mark hennen, ellen christi & drummer jackson krall show on 6-mar-1985 available on their website.

a week or two ago, i was again at the workmans club down on wellington quay, for a dublin jazz co-op show:  thomas schuttenhelm & sam perkin.  it sounded interesting & was but i wasn’t sure i’d enjoy it.  but enjoy it, i did!  it was super!  and music to make you think and to be thought about.  i had a nice chat with thomas schuttenhelm afterwards, a very interesting fellow (no surprise that!).  check ’em both out!

well, a charles tolliver double-header is a fine way to hit 500 posts!

the first show, from 1969, is a phenomenal recording.  as someone commented on dime, when it was shared a few years ago,

listening now, great stereo sound, good enough for a commercial release.  sounds fantastic, swings like crazy.

i can say the same right now!  and it goes for the second show, from 1971, which is maybe a lot more “tolliver-ish” (yes. btw, i see that the ’69 show is “all compositions  by charles tolliver), and which i think that i prefer.  i’ve been listening to very little except charles tolliver or the radio (which was sadly lacking any charles tolliver!)

btw, we now have a presence on mastodon,

well, i hadn’t really planned on this one.  i was listening to ibiza 2014 from the old discopolis recordings, and really enjoyed muriel grossman’s concert.  and then it fed right into the next concert, by susana sheiman, which i also really enjoyed.  and then i looked to see what other shows by grossman or sheiman i might find, answer being a nice show by susana sheiman from 2012.  well, fortunately i had the sense to stop before i went completely down the rabbit hole, as this sort of thing can rapidly escalate.  though i do need to go back to look for more muriel grossman… she is super!  anyway, the outcome of all of this is these three shows, leading off with muriel grossman & then susana sheiman at the 2014 eivissa jazzfest in ibiza, then, as a little dessert, a 2014 show by susana sheiman.  links and (if i get to it) samples are all together at the bottom of this post.  also, in case you’re wondering, no, i was not able to find websites or much of anything for most of the musicians.  finally, these are in mp3 format, somewhat unusually for this site.

these were both shared by ‘cosmikd’, years apart.  i was going to upload the 1988 show and then listened to the 2007 show & just had to go for a “twofer”.  of the two, i prefer the second (2007) simply because it has more elisabeth kontomanou and was mostly written by her.
