here’s the second of the three shows mentioned.  a little different than the other two, being improvisation and something that you have to listen to (i.e. not for the car, nor over dinner!) but very much worth the time doing so.  if you like improvisation , you might take a look at the improvised music company (it’s from here in ireland); i’ve been to a number of shows they’ve put on, which always have been very good and which mostly i’ve enjoyed.

this is the first of 3 shows i’ve lined up.  been a rather busy week, but i dug some super shows out of the archive, including this one which made me realize that i’m on a bit of a trumpet jag lately.  always a good thing!  also: i realize just as about to post that the copy i have (and as uploaded) misspells gonzález.

also in the news, i’ve been listening to czech radio jazz (český rozhlas jazz) a lot lately, and recommend it.

still out of town, listening to this on a little bluetooth speaker the size of a pack of cards that has a surprisingly good sound.  i just threw a few shows on the laptop before i headed out, and really hit paydirt with this one.  aside from mark murphy’s super singing, all the musicians stretch their legs a bit, which is always nice.  and such singing!  enjoy!

off travelling again, here’s one of the shows that i brought with me.  a little bit of research reveals this to be “the green street trio with houston person”, according to the jazz fest website.  it’s a great show and one of those audience recordings that really makes you wonder how they do it.  mine seldom come out well at all, and my tomato plants never bear fruit either.  ah, well!

hans rettenbacher died in dec 1989, aged 50, and joe nay died in a car crash in dec 1990,  aged 56.  both very young.  r.i.p.

with radio studio recordings, i sometimes wonder to what extent a performance’s length was set by the show’s time slot.  not that all venues & performers don’t plan or expect how long performances will be; of course they do, but that’s a bit different.  if it’s a live broadcast, i assume the show and the performance have generally been fit to each other, like a recent live broadcast on rté raidió na gaeltachta (though it ran a few minutes over).  for broadcasts of shows in other venues, i pretty well assume the show has been trimmed, if not re-arranged to boot for reasons best know to the producers.  but studio performances like this… i like to think the band kept on playing, if they were in the mood.

proving that too much is not enough, here’s this delightful show from edmar castañeda & joe locke, on harp and vibes — probably my two least favorite instruments in jazz, and yet, and yet…  the info file has mr. castañeda playing both colombian and classical harp.  i’m not sure what the difference is, and the internet didn’t help – “celtic harp” keeps popping up when i try to find out; i suppose i shouldn’t complain, living in ireland as i do, but still.  btw, this was shared in 96/16 which wouldn’t play for me, so i’ve re-encoded to 48/16.

very generously, lyle mays has a bootlegs page on his website,  so a tip o’ the hat to the bold lyle mays!  (he also has a store, just saying)  that page includes this show, but this version is from an fm broadcast, not mr. mays website.  it’s a great recording of a super pianist, but (as often) i enjoy having more than just piano-bass-drums.  and this show also featured tiger okoshi, billy drewes and joe lovano, so i get my wishes — and how!  maybe that’s why this is my favorite of the three shows with tiger okoshi up here, counting this one.  i could go on, but will stop here!

a bit of an unexpected break there due to covid, but i’m feeling much better now.  here’s another one that’s been lurking in the archives, waiting for the right moment, and it certainly found it!  love the lineup, a great show and a long performance (which is always nice in a great show, but not necessarily a defining characteristic).  there’s another show with tiger okoshi up here, if you’re a tiger fan (and you should be).  looking ahead, it might be a bit slow up here over the next month or so, as i’ll be travelling quite a bit, but i’ll see what i can do.

things are opening up here in dublin, at last, and though i’m nervous, i’ve been to one jazz show this month and have tickets for another.  it was so nice to get out of the house for some live music.

recording-wise (“-wise”… you can tell i’ve recently seen the apartment starring jack lemmon & shirley maclaine), it’s been a bit of a slow month though, with nothing really lighting my fire except for the arrival of a few cds i’d ordered in late february.  until the past few days, when things picked up starting with this 2012 show originally shared by ‘watten’.
