here’s what i was listening to this morning as i tried to fix my win10 start menu.  time will tell about that project, but at least rediscovering this  show meant the morning wasn’t a complete waste.  on the dime tracker webpage, someone asked the uploader “so you caught two sets at the vanguard and still managed to see this show?”  sounds like quite a day.

naoaki-san requested some kenny barron (among other things) on the posting here of a benny green show.  actually, to digress, that show is a bit of a magnet for requests (ok, it now has two…), so i probably should put up another benny green.  anyway, i did find this, which was the first of three nights at the regattabar, and enjoyed listening to it again, so here it is (but only the first night).  the regattabar is a bit of a magnet itself for three-nighters:  see the three nights of ahmad jamal that i posted here (link to 1st night) a few years ago.

i know i’ve said before things like “what is it with groups led by drummers?”  maybe, just maybe, i like drums more than i realize.  anyway here’s another one!

ok, so, and this is a bit freaky, doing the internet research on this, guess who’s at snug harbour in new orleans this tuesday?  yes, stanton moore, with david torkanowsky & james singleton.

i like the look of the cotton club in tokyo.  the photo reminds me of a jazz club in seoul, the once in a blue moon, that i went to a number of times, many of them with a good friend of ours (and at least once with him & his son as well).  nice memories.

nb – don’t be fooled by the ‘volume adjustment’ in the notes; you still need to turn this all the way up.  the original volume must have been in the basement.

the lounge lizards seem to have always been lurking somewhere on the edges of the music i’m listening to, going back to around the time of this concert.  a track on a college radio station, an lp, or later a cd, at a friends house, etc etc.  and now this show from almost 40 years ago that’s been hiding under the “l’s” for a few years.  john lurie’s comments are hilarious and endearing.  another tip o’ the hat to unclewolfi.

nice to hear a male jazz singer for a change (though, tbh, i tend to prefer the female singers), and sachal vasandani is super.  rather frustratingly, sachal vasandani was at arthur’s pub here in dublin back in october… and i wasn’t.  it was a monday night, and i just hadn’t checked what was coming up.  sigh!  there’s a lesson there.  hope there was a great turnout that will entice him back to town.

weill and sondheim!  in one tidy 2 hour package!  while i have a lot of weill, i don’t have much sondheim.  though i downloaded ‘sweeney todd’ yesterday, on the foot of running across this.  years ago – 12? 13?- i saw a phenomenal production of ‘sweeney todd’; an internet search suggests it must have been the 2007 production at the gate.  anyway, it was marvelous, probably my favorite of the musicals that i’ve seen.

i was looking for a show by a different billy, which seems to be missing, and ended up listening to this.  tantalizingly, the info file says “disc one”.  where is disc two?  anyway, this performance was just 3 weeks before billy harper (& this same lineup) recorded black saint, which includes “croquet ballet”.  maybe the missing disc two includes “dance, eternal spirits, dance!” and “call of the wild and peaceful heart”…

no, i’m not sharing it, but i noticed that this 4.4gb collection is available at plumdusty’s page.  if you don’t have this, it’s worth the effort to download it.  4.4 gigs seemed soooo much to download when i got it back in 2004, on a considerably slower internet connection that most people have now.  some of the tracks have been released, here and there, i believe.  here’s the artwork JohnColtrane-LiveTraneUnderground-artwork.zip in case plumdusty doesn’t have it.
