i’m off to sao paulo for a short visit.  fortunately, i found a usb solid state drive loaded with a wide variety of music, from some trip or other…  beefed it up with a half-dozen shows in brazil (why not?).  so we might have a bit of a break here.  then again, i might get a bit of a break there.  (“then again”… that’s a nice little idiomatic phrase, isn’t it?)

here’s one from 8 years ago, or so…  i found this very listenable earlier today, while working, and again (& more attentively) putting this posting together.

unlike ‘bpthree’, our otherwise unknown taper, i went to d.c. space a lot.  in retrospect, it wasn’t perhaps the “best” venue, but boy did it have great shows… which is really what it’s all about.

taper’s comments
this was the only time i went to “d.c. space”, which was essentially a row home.
they had a restaurant or bar downstairs, and the upstairs was used for the
performances. none of the instruments were mic’d, so it was like you were sitting
in your living room, and the guys came in to play for you. they did have a p.a. for
announcements, and that was it. while the sound was good, you also unfortunately
pick up other noises that would have been drowned out if the instruments had been
amplified. this includes my camera shutter, and some odd noise, especially on the
second show, that sounds like a minor loose connection, or something rubbing against the
mic. it’s not horrible by any means, but it is noticeable. i seem to remember there was
little or no seating, and my friend paul and i sat on the floor in front of sam & dave
(no relation to the great soul band!).

this was the last time i saw sam rivers, but i’m glad to hear he’s still going strong today.
like my posting of sam’s show at “the cellar door” from 1977 (torrent # 281440), this
one is “free form”, “avant garde”, or whatever you want to call it. i assume these
performances were just improvisations made up on the spot. dave holland also played
his bass with a bow, so if you hear sections that sound like a cello, that’s why. enjoy!

sunday night… time for a singer…   this show was a few months after  “bright and sweet”, virginie teychené’s third album, was recorded in mid-february 2012.  i’ve listened to this from time to time since ‘kingfrippson’ shared it on dime back in april 2012.  a regular when i’m stocking up a usb thumb-drive for a trip.

the question is whether to get her latest album, “a detour into the land of French chanson“.  the earlier ones are more up my alley, but there’s a lot to be said for a good track record and for branching out.

www.virginieteychene.com

i had a lot of trouble finding stéphane bernard (piano), gérard morin (double bass) and jean-pierre arnaud (drums) on the internet.  but they seem to be on all of virginie teychené’s albums (except j-p arnaud, who was not on the first).

btw, sorry for not updating the setlist — i’ve been meaning to for ages, but amn’t really in the mood for lyrics searches tonight, though these are all quite familiar (and probably on “bright and sweet”… just a guess ;-).

travelling again.  i brought a long an ssd usb drive that i’d stocked up with a bunch of music at some point in the past.  kind of interesting – what was i listening to, more or less, almost exactly 2 years ago?  there was a while when susanne abbuehl was a regular in the rotation in the car, but a bit earlier if memory serves…  uploaded in dec 2009 by ‘bleyplay’, so maybe a good bit earlier.  whatever, it still works for me, and listening to it again i remember track 5, “mane na”, was a favorite (and i still love it, so two samples today).  anyway, this show is around 6 months after, and with the same line-up as, her first album.

yes, i’m a bit of sucker for music of kurt weill, of hanns eisler, and of their work with bertolt brecht.  here’s a great show that ‘unclewolfi’ shared on dime just over a year ago.  i don’t have many shows with music by hanns eisler, unfortunately.  this show, and a few tracks on a bbc proms from 1996, and his ‘hollywood elegies’ (see kate westbrook ‘good-bye peter lorre’ on this blog).  and cds of course (i just ordered a cd by karyn levitt, actually).  see the international hanns eisler society or the north american hanns eisler forum for some good cd lists.
