having recently seen girl from the north country at the olympia with my wife, which we both enjoyed, i was glad to actually find this show lying around.  while i’m not the biggest dylan fan, i’d not have guessed that gftnc was all dylan’s music (sometimes even for songs that i knew).  and the music was really good (except hurricane, which didn’t seem to fit the story).  listening to this too, i kept forgetting that these are all dylan covers too, mostly from blonde on blonde which would be from the period that i would have listened to most.

here’s the next show, the fantastically named bellevue nurses with a live version of mingus’ the black saint and the sinner lady.  they’ve stretched out tracks 3 & 4 (or mode c and modes d-e-f, if you prefer) compared to the studio lp.  wonderful performance.

here’s one of two shows that took my fancy this past week.  first, an audio demux of a video from the 2016 montreux jazz festival. antonio faraò is one of my favorite pianists, and guitar-and-piano is such a nice combination.  so despite being “just” m4a 128/44, i thought i’d share this.  no sample as it’s not tracked.

well, we’re back in the saddle again after a little hiatus including that 10 days when the site was down.  it was just a little problem with a wp upgrade and some unhappy plug-ins, as i’d hoped.

anyway,  if you’re in the mood for some b3 jazz — and i am! — this might be the thing for you.  and the venue!  that is such a great way to see a show!  around here, the dublin jazz co-op has (as i may have mentioned once or twice) been putting on a series of shows on sunday nights at the workman’s club, in the vintage room, which is bigger than my living room, but by not much.  worth a visit if you’re in town of a sunday & there’s a series running.

i’ve tried to fill in the set list a bit, and in the process discovered that 3 of tony monaco’s students were at the show and 2 of them, monty hogan and phil something played the b3 on the first few songs in the second set.  one of them gave quite the unsolicited testamonial.  how do you teach the b3 organ, or any instrument, remotely?

btw, monaco talks a lot throughout but it was quite interesting (and his students are no slouches in that regard either).  if i had the time, i’d re-track this and really boost the levels for the chats (both to hear them in general but also, e.g. for the car, to be able to delete it).  maybe i’ll do that someday – one more little project to add the the pile!

superband is totally the word here.  not much more to be said about that!  the venue, on the other hand, is a bit mysterious.  as far as i can tell, the riverview supper club closed in 2000 and the site is now condos.  and yet, the occasional later reference on the internet,  like this tim warfield setlist from 2016 or this caitlin robertson setlist from 2019.  (i’m not familiar with those musicians, btw.)  the cover is an old photo of the original riverview supper club (1980-2000), and details of its namesake are no doubt out there somewhere.  ps, the cover is not in the zip file; click on the image if you want it.

here’s the second of the three shows mentioned.  a little different than the other two, being improvisation and something that you have to listen to (i.e. not for the car, nor over dinner!) but very much worth the time doing so.  if you like improvisation , you might take a look at the improvised music company (it’s from here in ireland); i’ve been to a number of shows they’ve put on, which always have been very good and which mostly i’ve enjoyed.

this is the first of 3 shows i’ve lined up.  been a rather busy week, but i dug some super shows out of the archive, including this one which made me realize that i’m on a bit of a trumpet jag lately.  always a good thing!  also: i realize just as about to post that the copy i have (and as uploaded) misspells gonzález.

also in the news, i’ve been listening to czech radio jazz (český rozhlas jazz) a lot lately, and recommend it.
