this is one of a number of shows that i uploaded to 1fichier, in the rather misguided belief (supported neither by past history nor any reasonable expectation) that i would have some spare time while visiting my parents.  naturally, i remember very little except that at the time, i planned to share it here.  anyway:  a good trip, now on the way home, waiting for my connecting flight, so straight to you from jfk international in ny…

like the last show posted here (which also feature ranee lee), this was shared on dime by ‘plaz_restore’, and again the comments below are from the info file.  i love the comment “…and taurey butler (piano). this was only the third concert that butler played since joining the quintet two days prior.”  anyway, that’s about it for shows from that great northern land, at least for now.

ranee lee is a consumate performer. an accomplished singer who started out as a jazz drummer and saxophonist, now she’s also an author of children’s books and an educator. she appeared at the 2010 winnipeg international jazz festival with her quintet in her first visit in 15 years. this performance was on canada day and ranee reflected that on this same day 18 years ago in 1992, she became a canadian citizen. she’s well known to winnipeg audiences and they appreciated the passion she brought to the stage. ranee recently won a juno in the category of vocal jazz album of the year for her live cd “lives upstairs”.

this performance is a mix of old and new, and includes a swing version of “she’s come undun” by winnipeg’s guess who.  ranee is accompanied by her husband richard ring on guitar and 3 very capable montreal players: david laing (drums), morgan moore (bass) and taurey butler (piano). this was only the third concert that butler played since joining the quintet two days prior.

oliver jones is one of canada’s finest pianist, and a top-notch composer/arranger. his career intertwines with the history of jazz in montréal where he was born and raised. if you are a jazz piano enthusiast and you haven’t heard of oliver jones, it may be because he grew up in the shadow of another montréal pianist by the name of oscar peterson. peterson was jones’ idol, inspiration, mentor, friend, and compatriot. in his own right, jones received the highest artistic honour available in canada, the governor general’s performing arts award for lifetime artistic achievement.

the scope of jones repertoire is uncanny. he normally reserves about 20% of his stage time to fulfilling requests, and few have stumped him. in this piano trio concert, the usual request time is filled with some very welcome guest appearances from some of montreal’s other jazz stars.

here’s a treat: hilary kole live at the iridium, singing a lot of ‘standards’, though not all standards that i’ve heard much (as she comments about one song, actually).  the only glitch is that the recording cuts out 30 minutes into the second set!  this was a live webstream (so a rare video here on cipjazz), with a bonus (ding! ding! ding!) of demuxed & tracked audio (.m4a a.k.a. aac-lc).  yeah, basically i just wanted to listen to this in my car.

we had a request for geoffrey keezer on piano, preferably playing standards.  i don’t have any solo shows, but there were a few which included him, including this one, that i don’t remember even listening to ever.  i really liked cd1, and would recommend this for that alone.  the concerto de aranjuez set it up, and botti, keezer, et al followed through wonderfully.  but cd2 didn’t work as well for me, that’s life.  let me know what  you think.

i seem to be on a run of shows that need to be turned up!  this one just has low levels – better you turn it up than i mess with it.  be that as it may, here’s a good quality audience recording from a super canadian vocalist.  it’s a long show, with quite a bit of variety.

maria joão has been a favorite of mine for a number of years, and she & david linx really shine in this original & refreshing versions of songs from porgy & bess.  it’d be great to see her in a full production of the show, wouldn’t it?

tapers notes:

billy vera is a legend here in los angeles. his mom was a singer on the perry como show, and her
musical talents obviously rubbed off on billy, who got his start writing songs for country and gospel
artists, such as judy clay and dolly parton. in the 70’s he formed a band, billy and the beaters,
which had minor hits such as “i can take care of myself” and “what did you think (at this moment).”

in the 80’s, he produced lou rawls last four lps and starred in some bit roles in television and
movies. he enjoyed a re-discovery when michael buble’ had a hit, 8 million copies strong, of
“what did you think.”

he is fan of doo-wop and the great songs of the 30’s and 40’s written by black artists, and this show
is dedicated to those writers, but with a big band accompaniment, a 16 pc horn and reed section. it
coincides with his new release, “big band jazz” which was released in 2013.

crowd noise in one direction was oppressive, so tracks were faded out to zero between tracks

dedicated to little jimmy scott, jazz singer.

i was watching the 1955 version of guys & dolls, with frank sinatra and marlon brando a week or two ago, and ‘if i were a bell’ has popped up a number of times since, including this fun performance from cleo laine.  and it is fun! which is more than i can say for brando’s singing in the movie (not that he ever sang ‘ding dong ding dong ding’… that would have been a real treat), though he was a good choice in other respects.   they must have been thinking of this movie when they made paint your wagon.
