the first half of this show is mostly all about esther phillips, and  the second half is more chelsea wilson’s own compositions.  the show is a whole lotta fun!  there’s a bit about the band at the time, and pics, on this page about a show she did on 14 sept 2014.

i don’t see a lot of jazz from australia on dime (or i miss it?)… what i do have are mostly female jazz musicians, including shows from the sydney international women’s jazz festival, and — coming back to chelsea wilson — a 2014 recording from the ‘women of soul’ series that she produces.   maybe i’ll give that a listen next, make it a australian soul morning.

full credit to the band also. i don’t know the names of the individual players otherwise i’d be crediting them on here also. [i’ve identified most of them – pete]
it was a small crowd but a fun show which i’m glad i attended (i was thinking of not going). there were a couple of mistakes/false starts but this didn’t take away from what a very enjoyable show.

chelsea wilson is a melbourne based soul & jazz singer who (after being knocked back by a number of record labels) independently released her debut full length album “i hope you’ll be very unhappy without me” earlier this year which has been getting some serious accolades. (what’s that they say about revenge?)
here’s just some of those accolades.

it’s very hard to file this as a jazz combo, but found no better options…
their sound fuses souljazz, bossanova and electroswing (with some jamesbrown funk at the end of the set), in a way that reminded me of working week, carmel (or sade), but never that good, with something from the nineties as morcheeba, and the sort of tunes you would find in mario biondi or some nicola conte… also included in this folder as track00 a short introduction in italian with bio notes and commentaries – this intro runs for 1’57”, you can skip downloading it if you don’t understand italian. the set was kinda abruptly edited to have it fit the 90mins radio show

nice to hear a male jazz singer for a change (though, tbh, i tend to prefer the female singers), and sachal vasandani is super.  rather frustratingly, sachal vasandani was at arthur’s pub here in dublin back in october… and i wasn’t.  it was a monday night, and i just hadn’t checked what was coming up.  sigh!  there’s a lesson there.  hope there was a great turnout that will entice him back to town.

weill and sondheim!  in one tidy 2 hour package!  while i have a lot of weill, i don’t have much sondheim.  though i downloaded ‘sweeney todd’ yesterday, on the foot of running across this.  years ago – 12? 13?- i saw a phenomenal production of ‘sweeney todd’; an internet search suggests it must have been the 2007 production at the gate.  anyway, it was marvelous, probably my favorite of the musicals that i’ve seen.

here’s a little more hammond b3 that’s been lurking on my drives for around 6 years, from sam salomone / sam anthony.  you can find out a bit about sam salomone from the central iowa blues society, including that he was inducted into the iowa jazz hall of fame.   ‘scooter123’ shared this in a folder labelled 1974-1975, but the info file said just 1974, so  i wonder if this is a compliation.  btw, i’ve reencoded the flac files.

tapers notes:

god bless sam salomone, for without him i may not have discovered jazz and jimmy smith. he played
a hammond b3 with pedles and a leslie of course. he was joined by frank tribble and tommy gordon.
this trio was joined by ella ruth pigee. they were the house band at a dump of a place called
ernie’s urban lounge. stemzie hunter of the electric flag joined them on sax, so they were really
a quartet, but whose counting. sam also got me into taping every concert i ever saw, no matter what
because if you don’t tape it, its only a memory.

the track list is mostly jazz standards, and i can’t recall them, so help me out with the titles of
the tracks.

update december 2018:

the flac files would not play in foobar2000. i tested them several ways, finding nothing wrong with
them… except that foobar2000 wouldn’t play. using tlh, i decoded and re-encoded (flac 5) the files.
i also created new ffp and md5 checksum files. in principle, the music should be identical to that
in the original flacs.

while this was shared by ‘dandrews’ in august, on dime, i didn’t actually download it until today.  it’s short, but the sound seems very good, and it’s a classic selection.  i also downloaded a longer show (also from 1968) which included an interview – did you know aretha franklin couldn’t read music?  she did it all by ear – but i preferred this one.  i was demuxing this anyway, but (except for the sample) didn’t track this.  enjoy!  and i hope you all had a good christmas & have a happy new year!

well, this has been something of a run, between posts here and to dime.  but i think it ends with this charming show by twana rhodes (who i’d not heard of before).  this was combined with a show by dianne reeves in a video, but i quite preferred this show.  so i’ve split it out into a separate video file and (very unusually) am uploading the video here, with an added bonus (here only) of demuxed, tracked, audio (in the original ac3 format).  learned a bit more about using ffmpeg and had some fun.  good thing i quite liked this, having listened to it around 3 times in the process.

original lineage:
all tracks are vhs rip via videoglide to an uncompressed .mov file then edited encoded via final cut pro.

additional lineage:
this was one of two shows shared in a single dvd-format (vob) video: twana rhodes & köstritzer band at
jazz baltica, salzau, germany sometime in the 1990s, and dianne reeves at jazzfestival bern, bern,
switzerland sometime in 1994. the video was converted into an mp4 container, which itself was then split
into the separate concerts.

ffmpeg command (vob to mp4):
ffmpeg -y -i “concat:vts_01_1.vob|vts_01_2.vob|vts_01_3.vob|vts_01_4.vob” -vcodec copy -acodec copy “dianne reeves 1994 bern & twana rhodes 199xx jazzbaltica.mp4”

original seeder’s comments
this dvd is part of a series of vhs rips from my collection of jazz originally broadcast on european tv satellite
networks from the years 1993 to 1999. i was in the process of disposing of many vhs tapes and thought it was a shame
not to capture these gems as they provided a lot of enjoyment for me in the pre youtube days.

video quality is as expected (or maybe even slightly worse then expected) from a 15-20 year old vhs cassette. some
audio clean up (noise reduction in audacity) was done on some rips there was constant noise throughout. audio ripped
from the encoded stream using mpegclip improved using the noise profile feature in audacity. i believe the results of
the audio editing won’t have many complaints. 🙂

i was listening to part of this the other day and noticed it was a duplicate — but the “duplicate” turned out to be (almost all of) the rest of the show. so here are the two halves, in flac format with replay-gain. researching this, i discovered (a) someone else did this too (but i don’t have that version) and (b) that version includes an encore. if that more complete version floats across my horizon, i’ll grab it but in the meanwhile…
