here’s another offering from the fine folks at ‘planet fun camp’, who recorded a number of great shows at the sidedoor in old lyme, connecticut.  i search for them periodically on dime, just to make sure i don’t miss any.  this is a super recording (as always) of a show that i think is sure to please.  big thanks to “lisa e.” who was the planet fun camp attendee!

yes, i’m a bit of sucker for music of kurt weill, of hanns eisler, and of their work with bertolt brecht.  here’s a great show that ‘unclewolfi’ shared on dime just over a year ago.  i don’t have many shows with music by hanns eisler, unfortunately.  this show, and a few tracks on a bbc proms from 1996, and his ‘hollywood elegies’ (see kate westbrook ‘good-bye peter lorre’ on this blog).  and cds of course (i just ordered a cd by karyn levitt, actually).  see the international hanns eisler society or the north american hanns eisler forum for some good cd lists.

here’s a show that i was enjoying this evening in between phone calls.  ‘survivor69’ shared it on dime in june 2014 and described it well:  quite classic jazz.  and very cheery, i thought, a real pick me up.  survivor69 called the show parker’s mood, since these long tracks are mostly from the album “woman’s land” , and somehow are intended in bird’s mood…, and di battista had an album “parker’s mood”.  i suppose that all hangs together.  speaking of charlie parker, i was also listening to stars of modern jazz, a phenomenal bootleg with several tracks by charlie parker.  look for that up next.  synchronicity.

but this has been mouldering away on my hard drives, probably unheard since i first downloaded it and gave it a listen.   i listen to virtually everything that i download, except the videos — for some reason, those are often overlooked.  so a lot of stuff never gets a second look.  unless, as today, i pick a random show.  today was “s” day; and so stefano di battista.  mind you, some still doesn’t get a 2nd listen past the first song.  but other shows make it into the car… or even up here.

it’s the day for vienna, i guess.  had some trouble finding something that i felt like listening to (i’d been listening to a tom waits show and was thinking of posting it here, but it seems to be both on 100 greatest bootlegs and also on past daily.  sometimes, one little thing…).  but seriously, after listening to tom waits, what did i expect?  doh!

aaaaannyway, this finally caught my eye:  a lovely little two-fer from erich kleinschuster in the orf studios, from late 1969 & early 1970.  ‘rillenheini’ seeded them (separately) on dime in mid-2015, but they go together nicely (and are a bit short, individually).  and the vienna day?  salena jones in vienna & graz from 1973 popped up next somehow.

this is one of my favorite lounge recordings, with that bit of background noise giving atmosphere but not taking too much away from the music.  only problem (if it is that) is that you need to turn this up a bit.  a nice collection of classics, including one of my favorites ‘willow weep for me’

about all i could find out online about margaret parsons is that (news flash!) she’s a jazz singer apparently based in the charlottesville area.

recorded all the way in the back of the club so as to be unobtrusive. definite club ambiance, including some conversation, clinking of glasses and cutlery, etc., but for the most part this was a good listening audience, allowing for a decent and enjoyable recording. recorded and seeded by bill tetzeli

‘survivor69’ who uploaded this on dime in late 2010 called this ‘this is “average” jazz (and i nowhere mean it badly) like you heard it hundreds of time‘.  maybe…  i was listening to it earlier today, while listening to it while working away like mad, and it was just right for the moment.  maybe ‘straight jazz, no pretensions’?  be that as it may, i listened to another rosario giuliana show, from 2001, which was also good, but not quite such a fit for my mood.  so you get this one.

introducing his latest album “lennies pennies” (dreyfus jazz, 2010), strangely without his usual cohort pieranunzi, this is “average” jazz (and i nowhere mean it badly) like you heard it hundreds of time. but it kinda rocks, i would say… also included in the folder, marked as track 00, an introduction and telephone interview in italian with giuliani – this interview runs for 12’55”

i ran across this just after posting the jazzmeia horn show, and they’re good companion pieces, even if this is more than twice as old as ms. horn!  this lh&r show seems to be all over the internet (mostly bootlegs), but it always comes back to gordon skene.  and this version too was originally from an mp3 on mr. skene’s past daily website, where he describes lambert, hendricks & ross as

the be all-end all in the late 1950s and into the early 1960s with their luxurious blend of human orchestra harmonies and scat phrasing

mr. skene shares untracked mp3s, but (unusually in my experience) at a good quality: 320 kbps, which is much appreciated.  and the sound is very good.  so i made an exception and converted it to .flac & tracked it.  it was a great fun giving such an inventive & playful show a really serious listen, while tracking it.  this is as fresh today as it was in early 1962.

actually, mr. skene shares a heck of a lot more than music, never mind jazz!… i spent (definitely not wasted!) as much time on his past daily websites as i did tracking this.  probably a good deal more time.  you should definitely go have a look.

song titles per https://www.israbox.cc/index.php?newsid=3137559094 , with a few changes
(corrections, i think…). my tracking is not precisely the same as their listing,
including in particular that i’ve split out a lot more song intros (generally, i split
them if over 25 seconds). also, between “avenue c” and “cottontail”, there is a 10-minute
piano solo, not listed on the israbox setlist, which i think is a gildo mahones solo.
